Psychology plays an important role in any game of poker and the way you act and think will most certainly have an effect on your game.

Depending on how you play, your opponents will be considering what you have up your sleeve, just as you will be assessing them according to their different playing styles and foibles. If you find yourself getting involved in loads of pots and regularly making continuation bets and bluffing, you may well be categorised as a loose and aggressive player. Contrarily, if you only play in a minimal number of poker pots and only call and bet when you have a winning poker hand, your opponents will realizing that you are a more tight player and that they should beware of your next poker move in case your holding those poker aces!

This can be to your advantage because if you play fairly ‘tight’ for most of the time and then, suddenly, you orchestrate an expected ‘poker bluff’, your opponents will probably think you have yet another good poker hand and unless they have the nuts they may fold earning you nothing.

So essentially, you have to mix up your play. Tight aggressive play is good but don’t be too repetitive by only considering playing good hands like the big slick or bullets! Otherwise you will be far too easy to read. Conversely, if you have been playing loose, entering no end of pots, your ability to pull off a successful bluff will be diminished because your opponents will be less inclined to think you have a strong hand when you make the bet.

Ultimately, flexibility is the name of the game. Be flexible, and vary your game-play. Change the pattern of your poker play, don’t fidget when you’re bluffing, or twitch too much or you’ll give the game away. ‘Oh, look, he’s flying American Airlines’ or ‘look at that oil running down his cheek’ (big slick) get it!!  So keep looking ‘the POKER face guy’ or wear that ‘lady poker face’ but don’t play gaga!

Remember too, if your opponents are unsure of the way you play, you will find that you can make much more profit from them. But if they know how you play and you continue to play the same throughout each session, say bye-bye to your bank roll.

So the next time you sit down at the poker table or play online poker at any of the great online poker sites around, be prepared to be flexible. Watch your opponents like an eagle watches its potential prey, and move in for the kill when your starting hand is right. Get your poker strategy or your hold’em strategy spot on for better play and more money in your pocket!

The impression you give obviously takes a little time, not just a few starting hands, so be on your guard from the first hand, vary your play and keep them guessing. Even in a showdown or heads up position, think of the likely outcome as to what he or she is holding before you waste a bucket of money and miss out on the top poker prizes. And lastly, watch out for the trap or you’ll be like the proverbial rat; caught right in it.

Good luck!
