Being successful at poker is not just about knowing the game - it’s also about bankroll management. In other words controlling your money, making sure you have enough to make the bets you want to without having to scrimp and scrape.

You need to exercise good money management skills so you don’t go broke at the poker table – because controlling your coins is the key to poker management. Make sure you set yourself limits by considering the buy-ins, especially in cash games when you could lose your hat!

A rule of thumb is in poker cash games, to make sure that you have at least 20 times the big blind. So if they are $1/$2, you should have at least $40. Alternatively, never put more than 5% of your bankroll on the table at any one time and keep your poker mind set in check at all times.

There will be times however good you are, when you will go through runs of bad luck; even if you are a good player due to bad runs of the cards and this is not necessarily down to bad play. So even if you think you’re a poker pro and can put on the best poker face, those bad beats can come to us all. So, keep a watchful eye on your bankroll and your stack for healthy poker management and successful poker play.

Online poker rooms offer a wide range of limits so it is possible to keep your bankroll under control, no matter how large or small it might be. Alternatively, if you are a tournament player, you should have around 40 buy-ins minimum which may sound expensive but it is advantageous if you allow for this.

Of course, when playing games like Omaha, Texas hold’em, 7 or 5 card stud, draw and others just for enjoyment, even though you’re playing for no money, your bankroll is up to you. But if you play regularly and really want to win, manage your bankroll with care. And remember, bankroll poker management doesn’t mean you’re going to win, it just means you are looking after your money.
